Things to do in El Paso with young kids:

1. The El Paso Zoo

Visit the El Paso Zoo is home to over 220 species of animals from around the world, including lions, tigers, giraffes, and elephants. The zoo also has a children's area with interactive exhibits and a playground.

Things to consider:

  • The Weather- El Paso is a hot city most of the year. Make sure to take sunscreen, a hat, and appropriate clothing for your kids. A few months of the year we have very cold days and some very windy days. Make sure to check the weather for the day before you decide to go.

  • Activities: Aside from the adorable animals, there is a playground with several tree houses and slides for the kids to play in. The zoo also has a splash pad for the kids to get wet in warmer days so make sure to pack a bathing suit and extra clothing. There is a carousel to ride that the entire family can enjoy. Kids under 2 years old are free and can be accompanied by an adult. Lastly, there are many events throughout the year, such as Boo at the Zoo or Día de los Muertos, where kids can dress in their costumes. Make sure to check if there are any events going on during your visit.

  • Interactive and Educational: Make sure to check for the giraffe feeding times, the sea lion feeding, and any educational shows in the amphitheater at the zoo. There is a train that takes you through the countries which is located at the main entrance of the zoo.

  • Food: There are a few restaurants inside the zoo with multiple options for your family. However, this can be a little pricey and maybe limited for younger kids. You can take snacks and drinks in and there’s several places you can sit and enjoy your meal. Make sure to take lots of water for the summer heat. There are also some snacks stands such as Dippin’ Dots, Cotton Candy, Chips, and more.

2. Southwest University Park

  • What you can take: The park does now allow bags inside the park unless it is completely clear or a small wallet. Make sure to consider this when visiting if you need to take in diapers, snacks, water, etc. I use a clear backpack that fits all my kids’ needs- see link HERE.

  • Tickets and Seats: If you have young and energetic toddlers, you might consider sitting on the lawn to allow your kids to roam free. The lawn is close to the kids‘ playground and splash pad so take a bathing suit for the warmer months and comfortable clothes to play in. Note that the lawn and playground are on the opposite side of home base where all the food and drink stands are.

  • Special events: some nights, there are fireworks after the games. Make sure to check if there are any celebrations the day you visit so you can prepare to stay later.
